Anger Management Counselling

Anger is a healthy emotion when it is used wisely. Anger gives us the energy to create change in our lives, to address the things that seem unjust or unsatisfactory.

BUT, when used destructively in intimate relationships it quickly becomes abuse and leaves you possibly guilty of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Increasingly research has proved the abusive and damaging effect caused to children who witness destructive anger, rage and violence within the home and current legislation is making it clear that where domestic violence exists within a home, this is to be seen as a CHILD PROTECTION ISSUE – it really is that serious a problem: but there is hope.

Cognitive behavioural therapy can help you gain control over your emotions and change your destructive and or abusive behaviour into more healthy and adult assertiveness. Therapy can help you understand what the triggers are that lead to the rage and help you develop the strategies to get your needs met in more healthy ways. You can be in control of your anger and not find yourself being controlled by it.

A course of CBT-Anger management will involve you learning how to use ‘ time out’ when you feel yourself losing control; identifying the thoughts that lead to anger and learning how to re-frame these more constructively; learning better communication tools to get your point across more effectively and give you tools to leave you better able to ask for your needs to be met.

Although CBT can be very effective in dealing with anger issues it is important to note that if you are a heavy user of alcohol then you will need to address this before coming to therapy. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it affects the way your brain works) and in large doses will leave you less able to regulate your emotions and less able to make effective use of a cognitive approach.
